Full Description
During observations made by Archaeology South East for shoring the deep navigation cut being built to link the Wellington Dock section of Dover Harbour to the existing outer harbour, a North-South line of medium sized oak piles were uncovered. These piles were set at intervals but there was no an attached waling beam or planking. It is possible that these piles once had a retaining or foundation function but the details are uncertain. These piles ran roughly parallel to feature R1 to the north and were cut by a later revetment of Beech (R3). A 16th to 18th century date for this feature may be suggested. (summarised in source) (1)
