Full Description
During observations made by Archaeology South East for shoring the deep navigation cut being built to link the Wellington Dock section of Dover Harbour to the existing outer harbour, a relatively un-eroded line of beech piles set tightly edge to edge with a single course of waling beam set on the eastern, seaward face of the piles, were uncovered. All of the timber used in this structure was clearly of beech, which is uncommon but not unheard of, as it is a cheap alternative to oak. All of the piles were c. 200mm wide by 100mm thick and hand sawn on all faces. The waling beam sections were joined with a stop splayed scarf. The condition of the timbers and the method of construction suggest a 19th century date for this feature. (summarised from source)(1)
