Full Description
During observations made by Archaeology South East for shoring the deep navigation cut being built to link the Wellington Dock section of Dover Harbour to the existing outer harbour, a North-South timber structure was revealed beneath a dump of large hard rock. This structure consisted of large oak piles and a single course of waling beam, also of oak, on the eastern (seaward) side of the piles. The piles were spaced 0.5m apart and survived 0.5m higher than those on the seaward side of the excavation. The waling was partially sawn out and a stop splayed scarf was used to join the elements. The type of construction methods used again indicates a likely 16th to 18th century date and this feature may have once formed part of the earlier post medieval harbour developments.
