During observations made by Archaeology South East for shoring the deep navigation cut being built to link the Wellington Dock section of Dover Harbour to the existing outer harbour, a dump of hard rock boulders mixed with chalk was removed revealing a north-south timber structure. The structure consisted of large oak piles set about 0.6m apart. Some of the piles were very large indeed over 3m long and over 300mm across. Some also had redundant treenail holes in them indicating previous use either in large ships or previous harbour works. A date range of the 16th to 18th century seems likely and it is possible that this feature formed part of the earlier post medieval harbour development. (summarised from source)(1)
