During an archaeological investigation at 1-7 Cowgate Hill, Dover in Kent, ahead of the development of the site into flats, two areas of Roman walling and an area of polished Roman floor was uncovered. The site is situated within the footprint of the Roman fort of the Classis Britannica and so these features are likely to be associated with this. The first wall was aligned NW-SE was observed for a length of +5m, it had a width of +1m and survived to a height of +0.35m. Another was located to the south west of the first, again it was roughly aligned N-S and it was observed projecting away from the rear L.O.E for a length of +2.40m It had a width of 0.64m and stood proud of the surface to a height of 0.23m (14.68m OD). Alongside these walls, an area of (truncated) crushed chalk and mortar was recorded across part of the extreme southern edge of excavation. This was laid in preparation for a polished Roman mortar floor, which was also recorded in a small area covering approximately 1.8m by 1m, above this crushed chalk and mortar.
