Findspot record TR 34 SW 1852 - Small anchor found in Dovers Western Docks

Summary

A small anchor was located during the removal of a round tower in 1867 at the former site of Round Tower Street, in Dover’s western docks. Round Tower Street was located on the southern side of the former site of Paradise Pent, which was a small harbour created in the late Medieval/early post medieval period. The site of a round tower is noted on early post medieval mapping in this location and sources note that this was originally one of two towers constructed in the late 15th- early 16th century, possibly by John Clerk who was master of the Mason Dieu during this period. The location of this anchor within the foundations of this tower therefore suggests that it is at least of an early post medieval date and may possibly be late Medieval.
