Full Description

The base of an early Anglo Saxon glass beaker or 'Palm Cup', 4th-5th century in date was located on Snargate Street, Dover, near the entrance to the 'Grand Shaft'. The vessel is Jutish and originates from near the Rhine or Seine. It was donated to Dover Museum in 1850 where it is located still. (1) No further information about the circumstances in which this vessel was located are known, though it may have been located during the works associated with the construction of the Grand Shaft entrance courtyard which was undertaken in the 19th century.
