Full Description

Parts of three Church Wardens pipes were located within aggregate at the former site of the Liberty Inn which was situated on the junction of Adrian Street with Five Post Lane before it was demolished in the 1930's as part of Dover's slum clearance. Churchwarden pipes emerged in the late 18th or early 19th century and were reputedly named after churchwardens, or night watchmen of churches in the time that churches never locked their doors. These "churchwardens" could not be expected to go all night without a smoke, so they had pipes that were made with exceptionally long stems so the smoke and the pipe wouldn't be in their line of sight as they kept watch. The pipes were donated to Dover Museum in 1955 where they are located still. (1)
