Full Description
Medieval building material, including 7" Tudor bricks and a portion of wattle and daub, was recovered from a house on Adrian Street during the demolition of the street as part of Dover's slum clearance in 1937. This early building material suggests at least a Medieval date for the settlement on this side of the town. Other finds of a Medieval date in this area include a Garderobe shaft which is located just to the south east of Adrian Street. The bricks and daub were donated to Dover Museum where they are located still. (1) A brief record of the finds made during these clearance works was produced by Mr Amos and he notes that 'the clearance of the site gave evidence, in brickwork and chimney breasts, that some of the houses went back to the sixteenth century'.
