Full Description
A cable chain of a unknown date or function was found in 1849 at the mouth of Dover Harbour, which, until the later post medieval/modern period, was located in an area which is today encompassed by Dover's Western Docks. The chain was donated to Dover Museum where it is located still. The Museum's accession book suggests that the chain is 'Ancient' indicating a possible Medieval date for it; as this is when works on this side of the harbour were started. No further information about the circumstances in which this chain was found is available. (1)
