‘Camden House was constructed over two, possibly three periods and has been heavily adapted over time with significant works to the elevation in an effort to regularise and strengthen its appearance and possibly in an effort to match the importance of its corner location. The building has had extensive alterations to keep it in some form of commercial use over the years. It is not a quality building especially given its location on a key nodal junction of the town centre. Its street alignment does not assist movement in the public realm and due to its history it changes direction awkwardly with the two street elevations being very different in both scale and proportion. The internal configuration the changes of level and make it difficult to link together. This has meant the upper parts of this building have been vacant for many years. The upper parts have been neglected over many years and the damage to the fabric is significant. Repairs that have been undertaken have in places not resolved the intrinsic detailing problems that have caused water ingress which has led to rot within the structural fabric. The overall contribution of Camden House to the Conservation Area, especially on this important key nodal corner, is therefore currently limiting its age.’
