Full Description
"Occasional pits, postholes and post pits cut these layers. Some of these may be associated with the post-mill, which is known to have stood in this part of the site until its final demolition in 1914…
The windmill at the north end of town is referred to in many early documents, it served for the milling of corn, and a decision to rebuild it was recorded in 1794.
Limited evidence for the presence of this windmill and its predecessors comprising a post pit in the approximate position at the Southlands School site suggests that the post-mill had little impact on the deposits on which it was founded. The feature would have originally have been cut from a medieval surface, the fill of the post pit cut included pottery of 19th-century date, probably derived from the demolition of the mill, which is known to have been carried out in 1914. This windmill was perfectly sited on one of the highest locations fronted by the exposed lower-lying meadowland to the east. The wind would have been unimpeded by any prominent landscape features on this side of the town. If the location of the windmill as shown on the tithe map is correct then most of the remains of this would have lain outside the excavation area at Southlands School." (1)
"A yard surface or possible NE-SW aligned road is included in this phase" . (2)
An assemblage of late nineteenth century pottery was found, matching well with the known date of demolition of the mill.
