Monument record TQ 77 SW 197 - Oval cropmark features north-east of Higham

Summary

The cropmark remains of a large incomplete ring ditch with a diameter of 49m, possibly a plough-levelled Bronze Age round barrow located on the south-western side of Dusty Hill. Within the ring ditch are the traces of an area of spread chalk which is thought to be the remains of the levelled barrow mound. This site is one of four such spreads of chalk extending WSW in a line from Dusty Hill. This site and one other have traces of an external ring ditches, the others are visible only as sub-circular chalk spreads. Each possible barrow has been recorded separately. All have been mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
