Summary

Three Iron Age coins discovered by metal detectorists at Tudor Farm near Stoke in 1989 and 1991. The coins were all gold quarter-staters; the first was dated c.45-40 BC and of the Cantii tribe, the second dated c.30-23 BC of the Cantii, Dubnovellaunus-in-Kent, and the third was dated c.40-35 BC and was debase with copper.

Full Description

(TQ81427455) Three Iron Age coins were discovered by metal detection at Tudor Farm near Stoke in 1989 and 1991. MSRC-MACER-IA-5 An AV quarter-stater, dated 45-40 BC of the Cantii tribe. The coin measures 11.5 mm in diameter and weighs 1.26 gm. The obverse side is blank, no banding and the reverse side depicts a trophy of good style with a circle of small pellets above. Catalogue reference VA 145-1, type Cantian G. ISDS-READK-IA-1 An AV quarter-stater, dated c 30-23 BC of the Cantii, Dubnovellaunus-in-Kent. The coin measures 11.5-12.25 mm in diameter and weighs 1.32 gm. The obverse side is plain with slight banding. The reverse side shows a Celticized horse right, pellet under neck, pentagram below horse, eight-pointed star behind horse, pellet-in-ring above horse surrounded by three pellets. Catalogue reference VA 163-1. It is a Cantian J type. ISDS-WILSV-IA-1 An AV quarter-stater, dated c 40-35 BC of the Cantii. The coin measures 11-11.75 mm in diameter and weighs 1.18 gm. The obverse side is plain and the reverse shows a Celticized horse left, pellet-in-ring on shoulder, pellet under tail, cross-hatched box below horse, corded triangle and pellets and pellet-in-ring's above horse. Catalogue reference VA 151-1. It is a Cantian H, Late Weald type. The coin is debase with copper. (1,2).
