Full Description
Part of an ancient timber pile was located at Dover's western docks in 1849. A large scale redevelopment of Dover’s western docks was undertaken in the Tudor/Elizabethan periods and it is possible that this pile was driven during this redevelopment. The timber was donated to Dover museum in 1849 where it is located still. (1)
There is no further information about the location or circumstances in which this discovery was made but the fact that it was located in 1849 suggests that it was uncovered during the works on the harbour which are known to have been completed in the mid-19th century.
