Full Description
(TR3363) 3 IA coins dated to the mid 1st Century BC found at Cottington Hill by metal detection in 1991. All are probably Gaulish. TWRA-WILKA-IA-10 It is made of AE, measures 16.75 mm in diameter and weighs 1.71 gm. On the obverse is a standing figure facing, possibly a warrior; face has large moustache, figure holds stick (?spear) in his right hand with which he is apparently stabbing himself in the side of the head, and may be holding a shield in his left hand (our right) his lower legs are heavily padded. On the reverse is a bull charging left, exergual line below. This coin does not appear in any catalogue references. Possibly new type, probably Northern Gaulish in origin. Coin is broken and incomplete (small piece missing) TWRA-WILKA-IA-13 It is made of AE, measures 14-15.5 mm in diameter and weighs 1.76 gm. On the obverse is a celticized head right, coin has pellet border. On the reverse is an eagle facing right, smaller eagle to right. Catalogue refernce-BN 6088 This coin is rather worn. TWRA-WILKA-IA-15 It is made of cast Bronze Potin (high tin content), diameter 18 mm, weight 3.50 gm. On the obverse is a stylised head right. On the reverse is a central pellet-in-ring motif, stylised boar above standing right, five pellets in crescent below. Catalogue reference-Scheers series 198 (cf plate XXIV, 695) BN 7905. Coin in very good condition.
