Findspot record TR 36 SW 80 - Late Iron Age coin, Cottington Hill, Minster

Summary

A late Iron Age coin was found by a metal detectorist on Cottington Hill in 1991. The coin has been idenitifed as of Cantian type, from the reign of Dubnovellaunus. Whilst some coins of Dubnovellaunus appear as early as 40-30 BC, this specimen has been dated to c.23-17 BC. The coin is made of silver and depicts a uncertain animal and a Celticized horse on either of its sides. The present location of this find is unknown.

Full Description

(TR3363) LIA coin c 23-17 BC of the Cantii, Dubnovellaunus-in-Kent, Ref TWRA-WILKA-IA-16. Discovered at Cottington Hill by metal detection in 1991. The coin is made of AR, measures 12-12.5 mm in diameter and weighs 0.91 gm. The obverse side shows an uncertain animal right, pellet-in-ring motifs in field and the reverse side shows a Celticized horse left, DVBNO above, pellet-in-ring motifs in field. Catalogue reference VA 171-1 and it is a Cantian K. (1)
