Full Description
The site of Ramsgate Airport a grass runwayed airfield opened in 1935 as a civil airfield and closed in 1968, briefly used during the Battle of Britain as a satellite of RAF Manston in 1940 (possibly known briefly as RAF Manston) following which it was disabled with obstructions for the remainder of the war. The airfield is centred at TR 3765 6735 and consisted of a grass runways with landing and take-off possible in two directions :NE-SW and NW-SE covering an area of approximately 780m x 615m. The main aircraft buildings including hangars and the Terminal building were located at the south-western end. The Only visible markings on the landing ground seen on aerial photographs was a painted circle 28m in diameter at TR 3755 6731 with RAMSGATE painted beneath it in large 8m high letters. The terminal building was art-deco styled building designed by Mr D Pleydell-Bouverie topped by a flat blade of concrete tapering at either end, extending beyond the walls of the building below. This was tragically demolished in the 1980s. After the war it re-opened as civil airfield supporting aviatation engineering and maintenance companies in some of the hangars, finally closing in 1968. The site is now an industrial park. (1-2)
