Full Description

(TQ87355330) Two Iron Age coins discovered near Harrietsham by metal detection in 1988. MSRC-GARYR-IA-4 dates from c 30-25 BC and the Trinovantes, Dubnovellaunus-in-Essex. It is made from AR and measures 10-10.5 mm in diameter and weighs 0.97 gm. The obverse side shows a Celticized head right, crescents for hair. The reverse shows a Celticized horse left, pellet-in-ring motifs on head and shoulder, (DVB) NOVELL (AVNVS) around. The catalogue reference is VA 1663-1 and it is a Trinovantian L type. The flan is not large enough to show full design. MSRC-GARYR-IA-3 dates from c 23-17 BC and is of the Cantii, Dubnovellaunus-in-Kent. It is made of AR and the diameter is 12.25-13 mm and the weight is 0.95 gm. The obverse side shows an uncertain animal right, pellets-in-rings in field. The reverse shows a Celticized horse left, pellets-in-rings in field. The catalogue reference is VA 171-1 and it is a Cantian K type. (1)
