Findspot record TQ 77 NE 33 - Late Iron Age coins, near Northward Hill Nature Reserve, High Halstow

Summary

Three Iron Age coins were discovered near High Halstow by a metal detectorist in June 1992. One was a north eastern Gaulish gold quarter-stater dated to c. 65-50 BC. The second coin was a Gallo-Belgic type gold quarter-stater of the Cantii, Dubnovellaunus-in-Kent'. It was dated to c 23-17 BC. The third coin was a Cantian gold quarter-stater dated to c.40-35 BC of a wealden type.

(TQ78407615) 3 LIA coins were discovered near High Halstow by metal detector in Jun 1992: MSRC-MACER-IA-7 is an AV quarter-stater dated to c 65-50 BC and is North-Eastern Gaulish. It measures 11.5-12 mm in diameter and weighs 1.34 gm. The obverse side is almost plain. The reverse side shows a geometric pattern; tree-like object in centre, lines and curves near tree, small curve either side of tree. The catalogue reference is VA 69-3 and it is Gallo-Belgic DB type. MSRC-MACER-IA-8 is an AV quarter-stater dated to c 23-17 BC and is of the Cantii, Dubnovellaunus-in-Kent. It measures 11.25-13 mm in diameter and weighs 1.30 gm. The obverse side is plain with slight banding. The reverse is Celticized horse right, 'V' shaped object above, pellet-in-ring motif in field. Catalogue reference VA 170-1 and it is a Cantian K. MSRC-MACER-IA-9 is an AV quarter-stater dated to c 40-35 BC and is of the Cantii tribe, It measures 10.5-11 mm and weighs 1.30 gm. The obverse side is plain. The reverse is Celticized horse left, pellet-in-ring on shoulder, corded triangle and pellet-in-ring motifs above horse, pellet below tail. Catalogue reference VA 151-1. It is a Cantian H and late Weald type. (1,2).
