Full Description

The standing semains of the wheel pit of the demolished Upper Mill, located in the gardens of Mill Cottages, were viewed and recorded by the Maidstone Area Archaeological Group in 2017. Upper Mill appears to date from around 1706, the mill was run as a paper mill until about 1850 when it was converted into a corn mill. The area surveyed comprised of the wheel pit which had been constructed for the 19ft diameter overshot water wheel. Water still flows through the wheel pit although it now enters low down by the side of the pit. The wheel pit now contains two 8in hydrolic rams, pipe work from the rams can be seen running alongside Salts Lane in the edge of Springfield Mill Pond. The mill became uneconomic to operate in 1908 when the macinery was removed and the mill left derelict. (1)
