Full Description

A surface air raid shelter is located within the grounds of the former national school, now a church centre, at Churchfields, West Malling Kent. It follows an irregular plan form but otherwise conforms to guidelines issued in the early years of the Second World War. It is of brick and reinforced concrete construction with blast lobbies at either end of the franmes to hold gas curtains. Though the original benches have been lost, a timber rail survives all round and iron hooks, probably for lanterns. (1)
