Summary

Approximately twenty-four Iron Age coins have been recovered from land around Archers Low Farm, near Sandwich in the late 1980s by metal detectorists

Full Description

(TR34005790) and (TR34055790) 5 IA coins were discovered near Sandwich by metal detection in the late 1980s. TWRA-TYMAR-IA-41-Dated to c 25-20 BC and of the Trinovantes, Tasciovanus. It is made of AE and measures 13-14 mm in diameter and weighs 1.37 gm. The obverse side shows Celticized heads right, jugate and the reverse shows a Celticized ram left, TA above, flowers in field around ram. Catalogue reference VA 1705-1. It is a Trinovantian M and in good condition. TWRA-TYMAR-IA-42-Dated to c 30 BC and of the Ambiani. It is made of AE and meaures 14.5-16.75 mm in diameter and weighs 2.79 gm. The obverse side shows a cow right with head facing, bucranium above, pellets in field, pellet border, off-centre. The reverse shows a warrior on horse left, holding long object in hand terminating in a ball, pellet to right, off-centre. It is part of Scheers series 80c (cf plate 391) It is Gaulish and in good condition. TWRA-TYMAC-IA-38-Dated to c 30 BC and of the Trinovantes, Dubnovellaunus-in-Essex. It is made of AE, measures 13-14 mm in diameter and weighs 1.47 gm. The obverse side shows a Celticized head right and the reverse shows a Celticized horse left, pellet under tail, pellet-in-ring and 2 'flower' or 'sun' motifs above. Catalogue reference VA 1655-1. It is of type Trinovantian L TWRA-TYMAC-IA-80-Dated to c 17-10 BC and of the Cantii, Dubnovellaunus-in-Kent. It is made of AE, measures 11.25 mm in diameter and weighs 2.28 gm. The obverse shows a boar right, top line of rectangular box below and the reverse shows an eagle standing right, wings spread. Catalogue reference VA 180-1. It is a Cantian L type. The coin is on much smaller and thicker flan than usual. TWRA-TYMAC-IA-15-Dated to c 50-30 BC and of the Ambiani. It is made of AE, measures 16 mm in diameter and weighs 2.27 gm. The obverse side which is in high relief, shows a facing figure,with four large pellets in field and the reverse shows a long-legged horse left, bucranium and ring above, pellet-in-ring below, pellet-in-ring in front. It is a variant of Scheers series 65 (cf plate 370) BN 8472. The coin is Gaulish and has high copper content. (1)
