Full Description
Finds of metal, worked stone, tile/slate, shells, animal bone, teeth and some 500 sherds of late medieval and post medieval pottery, and a few sherds of possible Roman wares, were uncovered during a small, shallow excavation within the basement of the GII* Listed Building 'Centuries' in Hythe, Kent.
The pottery represented a maximum of 314 separate vessels. The animal bone included mainly that from cattle, though some goat, fish, bird bones and boars tusk were also identified. The shell included Oyster, Mussels and Winkles. The metal work was mainly very badly corroded but included: a sickle, knife blade, forged wood chisel, cannon or mill ball, slag, 'dogs' head Tudor small knife blade, small finger ring, medallion/button and a linked chain all in iron. Rolled lead fishing weights, small piece of sheet lead, and a lead conical bullet head. Two coins were also uncovered: one a King Edward penny (c1300-1351) and a Henry VII halfpenny. The worked stone included whetstones, fragments of window mullion and dressed stone. The ceramic material other than pottery included tile, mainly peg with some slate and floor tiles. (1)
