Full Description
A linear feature of a probable early post medieval date was uncovered during an archaeological evalutaion undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust on land to the rear of The Lobster Pot, 47 Swan Street, West Malling, Kent. The feature has been interpreted as a possible drain, extending along the western side of the original road.
The feature was located on the eaastern side of two trenches and appeared to be aligned north–south. The edge of the feature had a steeply sloped profile at the top, becoming steeper and near vertical towards the base of the trench. The cut extended below the base of the trench and was only partially excavated due to the mass of large stone inclusions that it contained. The cut was in excess of 0.8m wide and extended under the eastern boundary wall of the yard. It contained an orange greyish-brown silty clay, chocked with large ragstone/sandstone blocks. The fill yielded one sherd of post-medieval, probably seventeenth- or eighteenth-century stoneware and a fragment of clay pipe of similar date. (1)
