Findspot record TR 26 NE 156 - Iron Age coins, near Monkton Court Farm

Summary

Four Iron Age coins were discovered by metal detectorists near Monkton in the 1980's. Three of the coins were made of cast bronze and dated to c.100-90 BC. They were of Trinovantian type and one was in a poor condition, showing evidence of corrosion. A fourth coin dated to c.23-17 BC and was of Cantian type. This coin is thought to have been made of silver. It is uncertain where these finds are now located

Full Description

(TR27956500) IA coins (4) were discovered near Monkton by metal detection in the 1980s. TWRA-TYMAC-IA-7 Dated to c 100-90 BC of the Trinovantes. It is made of cast bronze potin, measures 18 mm in diameter and weighs 2.02 gm. The obverse shows a head of Apollo left and the reverse shows a degraded bull charging left. VA 1428-1. It is type Trinovantian A. TWRA-TYMAC-IA-45 Dated to c 100-90 BC of the Trinovantes. It is made of cast bronze potin, measures 16.5 mm in diameter and weighs 3.33 gm. The obverse side shows a head of Apollo left and the reverse shows a bull charging right, exergual line below. It is a Trinovantian A type. TWRA-TYMAC-IA-48 Dated to c 100-90 BC of the Trinovantes. It is made of cast bronze potin, measures 15.75 mm in diameter and weighs 3.27 gm. The obverse side shows a head of Apollo left and the reverse shows a bull charging right. Catalogue reference VA 1406-1. It is a Trinovantian A type. The coin is in poor condition with some corrosion. TWRA-TYMAC-IA-82 Dated to c 23-17 BC of the Cantii, Dubnovellaunus-in-Kent. It is made of AR, measures 11.5-12.5 mm in diameter and weighs 1.05 gm. The obverse side shows an uncertain animal right, wavy tail, pellet-in-ring motifs in field, off-centre. The reverse shows a Celticized horse left, pellet-in-ring motifs in field, pellet below horse, Catalogue reference VA 171-1. It is a Cantian K type. (1)
