Full Description

`...got ashore on the Goodwins on Thursday night and immediately sank. The ebbing tide allowed the crew to remain aboard all night, during which they made distress signals, but in vain. At 7am., they were obliged to leave the wreck in their own boat, pouring oil on the sea to calm it. They were able to cross the sands and were picked up by a Ramsgate lugger and landed at that place. It is not expected that either vessel or cargo will be saved.' Vessel was Prussian - Nationality therefore given as both Poland (Szczecin lies in modern Poland) and Germany (Szczecin was formerly named Stettin and in Prussia - a `German' nation).
