Full Description

Spelling of this vessels name may be ELESONORE or ELEANORE. At 10pm this French schooner went ashore on the North Sand Head. The steam tug SAMSON took the lifeboat NORTHUMBERLAND in tow, but on reaching the site found three luggers already there but unable to get close to the wreck. The lifeboat made two attempts, both of which failed and was then flung on her side and filled and went ashore on the sands herself but got off. A third attempt also failed and again the lifeboat was swamped. The wreck then broke up and went to pieces. Her captain, quite nude, swam to the lugger ONDINE and was saved as was one passenger, but all the crew drowned. The one passenger saved, a young man, by the name of Le Fevre, had a marvellous escape. He lashed himself to a spar on the sands at low water and remained exposed to the wind and sea all night until noon on Wednesday, when he was saved.
