Full Description

`Deposition of William Spears, John Bayley and the boat's crew of the BRITON'S PRIDE and SEAMAN'S HOPE, both luggers of Deal, for services rendered. Both boats were launched at 3am in a rough gale from the NW. About 6am saw flashes and heard the report of a gun as if from a ship in distress. We bore down in that direction and by the light of a blazing tar barrel saw the brig on her beam ends on the sands. After three ineffectual attempts, due to heavy weather, we threw a rope which was secured and William Spears got aboard, but had hardly done so than the rope broke and the boat smashed into the wreck carrying away its mizzen mast and knocking off the rudder. The brig later sank so that only the top of her masts showed. They left the wreck at 11.30am, reaching the shore at 12.30. Two boats and 17 men were involved in this service.'
