Full Description

`...At 9.25pm. the Ramsgate lifeboat was alerted by signal guns fired by the light vessel on the northern end of the Goodwins. In a heavy NE to E gale with heavy seas, the tug AID took out the lifeboat at 9.40pm heading for the North Sand where keepers on board the light vessel told them that a vessel had been seen on the Goodwin Knoll, but had forged over and gone to the westward. The lifeboat then learned from the GULL light vessel that the brigantine had passed through the Gull Stream, and the lifeboat returned to Ramsgate at 1.30am. At daybreak, alarm guns were fired by the GULL light vessel and again the lifeboat and tug put out. On arrival the mast of a sailing vessel was seen on the Goodwin Knoll, with the crew clinging to the mast head. The tow was slipped and the lifeboat veered down to save five men who were exhausted, having been in the rigging over 12 hours. One crewman, a lad, had been washed from the mast during the night and drowned.'
