Full Description

`At 9pm the Ramsgate lifeboat was called out in response to signal rockets from the light vessels to the assistance of a large brig. The tug AID towed out the NORTHUMBERLAND lifeboat in a hard NE gale, and on arrival found the brig on the face of the Goodwins. They also found the smaller Broadstairs lifeboat under the lee of the wreck, and all five crew on board the vessel. As the officers and crew refused to leave at first, although evident the ship could not be saved, the NORTHUMBERLAND stood by until she began to break up at 2.30am. With the Broadstairs lifeboat now damaged and disabled both the crew of the brig and that lifeboat had to be taken off, which meant there were now 30 persons on board the Ramsgate boat as they sailed back, the damaged lifeboat tied astern. They struck heavily on the sands on passage, completing the destruction of the smaller lifeboat but reached harbour safely. The tug master returned alone thinking the lifeboat lost.'
