Full Description

`...having been wrecked on the south end of the Goodwins, as soon as the tide had flooded sufficient for the lifeboat to cross them, the Walmer lifeboat was launched, then took down her mast and sails while her crew rowed through heavy seas. Although three men could been seen in the rigging of the wreck the lifeboat was unable to get close. Whilst they waited for the tide to turn when the sea would go down, the mast collapsed. As a consequence, one man drowned, one was taken into the lifeboat and the third, the master, fell into the sea. A lifeboat man named John Chadwick, jumped overboard, swam to him and got him back alongside. As the crew leaned over and grasped his clothing so it split and he fell back into the water and disappeared, presumably drowned. The crew of the lifeboat were voted 13.10s. expenses by the Society.'
