Full Description
`...the GUTTENBURG having rescued the 14 crew of the CANTON in the Atlantic, the survivors were put on board the Walmer boat COSMOPOLITE. The GUTTENBURG itself then went ashore on the South Sand Head, her captain, Mr Pearson and 22 others were lost including six females. A total of seven were saved five of whom drifted about for several hours in a small boat in the severe cold until reaching Dover Bay at 3am. Mr W Irons of Dover sent out the harbour tug to render assistance but on arrival nothing of the ship was to be seen. The crew of the light vessel stated they had seen her capsize and go down with all on board excepting those previously saved. A charge of neglect of duty by the Ramsgate Harbour Master was made in not sending assistance to the GUTTENBURG, but the Trustees of the Harbour Commissioners were satisfied with Captain Shaw's conduct.'
