Sank of the South Goodwins, some six miles NE of Dungeness at 6pm. The captain and crew attempted to reach Dover or Folkstone in their own boat but were defeated by the tide and forced to row into the Downs, reaching Ramsgate 10 hours later at 4.30am. on the Monday. Being so early, they found no one in the streets of the town and just wandered about until their attention was drawn to a fire which had started in a draper and outfitters shop at 79 King Street, belonging to a Mr. Henry Stapelton. Police Constable Stead found the fire and raised the alarm, only then did the shipwrecked sailors receive any attention and were sent to the new and only recently opened Sailors Home.
