`...Board of Trade inquiry held at Greenwich Police Station on Saturday into the loss of the RANEE. At 2.30pm on the 6th, the weather being rather thick, the vessel struck the south end of the Goodwins about 2.5 miles NNW of the South Sand lightship, and about 1.5 miles WNW of the south Calliper buoy. The master said he mistook the South Sand Head lightship for the Varne. The court decided that the loss was due to careless navigation by the captain, whose certificate was suspended for nine months.'
