Full Description
TQ 54007026. Late Iron Age farmstead. (1) The site excavated was that of a late Iron Age farmstead, covering at least two acres. The major enclosure was circular, with a deep V-shaped ditch, and flanked by a small cattle enclosure to its south; an eastern drove way led to the main entrance. Storage pits and post-holes were located and domestic rubbish, containing pottery, bones and quernstones, was recovered. (2) Excavation ahead and during the construction of the Dartford/Swanley Link was completed and patrols over the route during construction continued. Of the sites excavated an enclosure of Late Iron Age date in the parish of Sutton-at-Hone proved the most interesting. About 1 1/2 acres was cleared mechanically and work by hand revealed a complex of ditches, post-holes and pits. These produced an important group of Late Iron Age pottery, animal bones and a fine potin coin. (3)
