Full Description
`...A large American ship drove ashore on the sands at 6pm today, Saturday. On hearing distress signals from the GULL lightvessel, the Ramsgate lifeboat and tug put out, and found a large, full rigged ship on the Goodwins. She was quite deserted and all her boats were missing. The vessel was fast breaking up and disappearing into the sands. The only words that could be seen on her stern were `New York'. A large piece of this vessel was later found floating by the luggers BUFFALOW GAL and TARTAR, was towed to Ramsgate and put ashore on the sands where it has attracted considerable attention. The piece of wreck was sold by auction on 3rd October.' Date of Loss Qualifier: A Additional sources cited in United Kingdom Shipwreck Index. KCT.30.09.1870(R); TT.12.09.1870(R) p5
