Full Description

`...Early in the morning, distress signals were fired from the South Sand Head lightship, causing the Kingsdown lifeboat of the then National Lifeboat Institution to be launched, which found this Norwegian barque ashore on the South Calliper. A Deal boat was found to already be on scene, and had already taken off the crew just as the lifeboat arrived, although the master and mate refused to leave. With surf breaking on the sands the lifeboat crew knew that they could not force the men off the vessel, neither could they abandon them. They therefore waited in the immediate area and as the tide rose, so the vessel broke her back and became a total wreck, at which time both men were only too glad go leave her.'(TT) `...known to be carrying barley, since a great quantity was later found floating. Feared she has been lost on the southern extremity, since several luggers put out and saved some of the cargo, but the following day nothing of her was to be seen.'(KCN) Date of Loss Qualifier: A Additional sources cited in United Kingdom Shipwreck Index.
