Full Description

`...Charles Brown, the only survivor from the HIAWATHA, lost on the Goodwin Sands, has given the following statement - the ship left Bremerhaven on 10.11 at 4am.; on the 12th the wind blew hard with squalls from the NE. On Wednesday 13.11 at 2.33pm with the weather thick and the tide ebbing, the wind blowing a whole gale, we were under foursail, close reefed fore and main topsail, mainstaysail and spanker, when I saw breakers ahead. I was at the wheel at the time, gave the alarm and tried to steer us clear, but we went ashore. The mate came on deck and tried to get the boats launched but these were soon swamped. One was manned but capsized, and I was thrown into the sea, but managed to get on top of the galley and hang on. I was picked up about four hours later, nearly incensible from the cold. It was a galley punt from the LEANDER of Deal which rescued me. The master went below shut his cabin door and was never seen again; 14 of the 15 crew have drowned.'
