Full Description
`...Drove ashore on the SE Spit on a Sunday during a gale from the SW. The first indication of a wreck was the warning guns fired by the S Goodwin lightvessel. The Deal lifeboat was launched and found the LEDA with her main and mizzen masts broken off and lying across the wreck. Coxswain Robert Wilds took down the lifeboat sail and then dropped anchor on the end of 160 fathoms of hemp. The anchor was dropped a quarter mile ahead of the wreck after which the lifeboat veered down on her enabling them to get the crew off the wreck and onto the lifeboat. A wave then carried the lifeboat completely out of control deep into the tangled mass of rigging but fortunately the lifeboat drifted clear and set off for Deal where they landed safely. The only casualty was Tom Cribben, a lifeboatman, who never recovered from the exposure he suffered that night.'
