Full Description
`...the vessel was seen to go ashore on the outer edge of the E Goodwin by the crew of both the GULL and the Goodwin lightships, which made the usual signals to shore. The Ramsgate lifeboat BRADFORD, under tow of the tug AID, together with the Deal and Walmer lifeboats were soon on the spot rendering assistance. Efforts were made to lighten her by throwing cargo overboard and vigorous pumping, but still the water gained, and it was obvious that there was no chance of saving her. The crew were therefore taken off by the Deal lifeboat, but the captain and mate refused to leave her and the Ramsgate lifeboat therefore remained at anchor close by. When the depth of water in the hold reached 14ft both men asked to be taken off and were landed at Ramsgate. The captain had tried to make a quick voyage, and not signalled for a pilot although he had only been through the Dover Straits once before; he had also neglected to take soundings.'
