Full Description
`...Vessel left Middlesborough on 11th October with 1,288 tons of cargo, mostly railway iron, of which 1,147 tons was iron chairs and sleepers intended for use in India on sandy soil, since each chair weighed 86 lbs. The sleepers were laid end on end in tiers. In heavy weather her cargo shifted, and she put back indicating her distress with flares until the tug HIBERNIA took her in tow. Unfortunately they could make no headway and she dragged ashore onto the inner face of the Goodwins opposite Deal. The BRADFORD lifeboat, in tow of the VULCAN steam tug went out in answer to signals from the GULL lightvessel and saved 15 of the 29 on board, of which three died. The survivors, mostly Lascars, were taken to the Sailors Home in Ramsgate, some so benumbed that they had to be placed in hot baths before they could move. The ship's stores were salvaged by the CHAMPION and other luggers and sold on 16.11.1881. Commissioner Rothery declared that she carried too much cargo.'
