Full Description
`...at 11.30pm guns were heard fired from the GULL lightvessel and the BRADFORD lifeboat in tow of the VULCAN put out from Ramsgate. Sea conditions were heavy with the wind strong from the WNW, clear, but bitterly cold. After passing over the Brake Sand, a flare could be seen on the NW spit of the Goodwins, and the lifeboat sailed close in to the lee of the vessel, and passed a line. She proved to be the schooner ETHEL which had four feet of water in her hold and heavy seas breaking clean over her. The crew were advised to leave which they did, and in the rescue the 2nd coxswain of the lifeboat, William Cooper, was knocked overboard but managed to clutch hold of a boat hook and was pulled back aboard. The schooner became a total wreck, the survivors landing at Ramsgate.'
