Full Description
`...At 1am on Tuesday, rockets and guns from the North Sand Head light vessel caused the BRADFORD lifeboat and tug VULCAN to put to sea. On closing the North Sand Head lightship, a large fire was seen and later a barque was found to be on fire, dismasted and deserted. The lightships crew said they knew nothing of the crew of the vessel except that she looked Norwegian and was about 500 tons. The Broadstairs lifeboat also arrived on site, both being towed back to Ramsgate by the tug. The wreck was allowed to drift and the crew of the smack CHOICE of Ramsgate later reported finding her still burning. They had in fact boarded her and confirmed her name as being the ALA, being able to salvage a topgallant yard, some rigging and coconuts found floating in the sea, but did not know whether these had been part of her cargo.'
