Full Description

Approximate position as apparent on 1946 aerial vertical photography. (1)

Partially revetted slit trenches and a weapons pit of Second World War date were visible as earthwork in RAF/106G/UK/1131 RS 4006 17-JAN-1946 (these features were in place by mid-1942 (see RAF/HLA/564 6045 01-JUN-1942) but are largely obscured by tree canopy at the time of that photography, and so were mapped from the later Winter 1946 image).

The defences enclosed the south-west and south-east corners of the ground around Thorne Farm. A second earthwork weapons pit (RAF/HLA/564 V 6044 01-JUN-1942) was positioned to the east, outside the farm grounds but close to a hedge line and inside a barbed wire entanglement that fully enclosed Thorne. These features were recorded as levelled earthworks in Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 07-APR-2021 and were mapped as part of the Historic England Isle of Thanet project in 2024. (2-5)
