The BERESFORD, of West Hartlepoool and bound for Bombay was fouled at her anchorage off the E Goodwins when the GERMAN EMPEROR struck her at 4am on Monday, sinking in three minutes under the bow of the other vessel. The BERESFORD launched a boat, recovering Richard Gordon(AB) and the two Spanish passengers, Uttitia and Tayo the latter having suffered a broken leg. The boat was then unable to relocate its parent vessel in the fog, eventually being picked up off Dover by the SS KNIGHT COMPANION. A second boat lowered by the BERESFORD was picked up and towed in by the tug LADY VITA. Richard Gordon stated that he heard the cry - All hands on deck, the boats sinking.
