Full Description
`...On Monday, at 9.45am, guns from the GULL lightvessel were again heard, and the Ramsgate lifeboat in tow of the VULCAN put out to the SE part of the sands. On reaching the area the BRADFORD sailed down in a blinding snowstorm, rough seas and a NE gale. She found a large barque, already a total wreck, broken from the floor heads and a lot of wreckage, but no signs of life. The name on the bow was LEONIDAS, and the vessel has since be identified. It appears she went ashore early morning, her crew taking to the boats after several hours. They were in danger of sinking when the galley punt HOPE of Deal rescued them and they were landed at Deal at 10.30am.'
