Full Description
`...Distress signals from the North Sand Head area caused the Ramsgate lifeboat and tug to put to sea where they found the three masted CROCODILE, the hull underwater and the crew in the mizzen rigging. Coxswain Fish got the boat in a good position for a rescue when the cable parted and the half frozen survivors had to await the tug pulling the lifeboat to windward again before another attempt could be made. A bad snow squall then followed but six men were rescued. The last to leave was the master who, in getting from the weather rigging to the lee of the vessel, fell from the masthead and drowned, the lifeboat crew being unable to save him. The Deal lifeboat also went out to this wreck but offered no service. The CROCODILE went ashore on Deal beach in the spring of the previous year, 1890, when she was got off and into Ramsgate for repairs. The wreck of the CROCODILE, still with some sail set, was easily visible from the shore.'
