Monument record TQ 73 NE 352 - Quaker burial ground, Cranbrook

Summary

In 1672 the Quakers decided to buy a burial ground in Cranbrook. This was the second attempt to establish a burial ground in the town after the first, at Bull's Field, was forcibly resisted by local people. The burial ground was at Courtstile on what is now Quaker's Lane. It served the Quakers of Cranbrook, Staplehurst, Sutton Valence, Tenterden and Goudhurst. By 1722 the burial ground was nearly full and so was extended to the west. The last Quaker meeting in Cranbrook was in 1751 and the last recorded burial was in 1807. The burial ground was sold in 1922 and a house has since been built there (Quaker House). As far as is known the burials remain.
