Summary

During the construction of a new interpretation site in the Abbey precinct, several Medieval graves were recovered indicating the presence of a burial site (part of the Medieval lay cemetery).

Full Description

During the construction of a new interpretation site in the Abbey precinct, several Medieval graves were recovered indicating the presence of a burial site (part of the Medieval lay cemetery).

In total, 24 skeletons were identified and removed for later reburial. They were found along with Medieval pottery as well as coffin nails giving the site an estimated 11th-15th entury date. The skeletons were identified to be both male and female with some child graves. Finds included fragments of Roman brick, tile (flue tile and tegula), and pottery, a Roman coin, early medieval pottery including one sherd of Ipswich ware, Medieval pottery including Rhenish Stoneware,a few silver finds and copper alloy fragments, Medieval roof tile, 16 fragments of architectural stone and iron coffin nails.
